When are the key tax deadlines I need to know?
Important dates include:
5th October: Register for Self Assessment (new clients)
31st January: Online tax return deadline + balancing payment + 1st payment on account
31st July: 2nd payment on account
Company accounts: 9 months after your year-end
VAT returns: Usually quarterly, due by 7th of the month
PAYE: Monthly, due by 22nd of the month
What are payments on account and do I need to make them?
Payments on account are advance payments toward next year's tax bill, required if your previous year's tax bill was over £1,000.
You'll make two payments:
1st payment: by 31st January (same date as your tax return)
2nd payment: by 31st July
Each payment is typically half of your previous year's tax bill. We'll calculate the exact amounts and advise you well in advance.
What happens if I miss a deadline?
HMRC charges penalties for late submissions and payments. We'll always give you plenty of advance notice of deadlines and help you stay compliant. If you're struggling to meet a deadline, contact us immediately - we may be able to help with extensions or penalty appeals.
Can you help reduce my tax bill?
Absolutely! Tax planning is one of our key services. We'll review your situation and suggest legitimate ways to minimise your tax liability, such as:
Pension contributions
Allowable business expenses
Capital allowances
Income timing strategies
Corporate structure optimisation
